We were nervous but excited as we set off on Monday morning for our first ever school workshop, where 30 Year 7 pupils were waiting to learn all about food waste.
Following a short introductory presentation, we jumped straight in to the main event; a cook off.
The children were split into three teams and each given a nutritious and hopefully delicious dish to cook using the same basic ingredients. The idea was to show how those same ingredients could be used to make 3 completely different meals using different herbs and spices; a curry, a soup and a casserole.
They were a fantastic bunch of kids, full of insightful questions and more than happy to muck in with the chopping and stirring.
Whilst the dishes simmered away, the three teams completed a quiz packed with food waste, sustainability and nutrition questions.
Then it was time to taste the food! A group of teachers judged the curry to be the best dish of the day, but as far as we were concerned, they were all winners!
As we returned to campus afterwards we reflected on a fantastic day, and looked forward to the next workshop – which is less than a week away.
